Facial Wrinkles and Frown Lines

Many believe facial movement causes wrinkles
The sun damages our skin, making it less elastic
The sun changes the physical composition of our skin over time
These changes make wrinkling more obvious

Facial Movement Doesn't Cause Wrinkles

Many of my patients come into my practice believing that their forehead lines or facial wrinkles, crow’s feet for example, are the result of the movement of their facial muscles. Everyday I hear “Why does my skin wrinkle from moving my face?” My answer is always the same: Those lines wouldn’t be there if the skin wasn’t damaged.

Blame it on the Sun

Children move their face muscles all day long and don’t get lines or wrinkles. The lines occur because our skin is damaged by the SUN. The normal collagen and elastin matrix that comprises our skin gets damaged and creates abnormal, sun-damaged elastic fibers. In addition this sun-exposure degrades our collagen. Where normal skin is 80% collagen and 4 % elastic fiber mesh network, sun-damaged skin can be as much as 80% abnormal elastic fibers, clumps of abnormal elastin tissue.

From Rubber Band to Rubber Tire

Imagine a rubber tire, as compared to a rubber band which stretches and recoils. Those rubber band fibers are destroyed as is the normal collagen, and replaced by garbage elastic material which is called solar elastosis.

This is the problem that occurs with sun damaged skin. Those lines that appear on our foreheads and around and between the eyes are the result of facial muscles interacting with sun-damaged skin. A good way to treat the wrinkles that appear as a result of muscle movement can be with Botox or other dermal fillers.
